Quilts for Heroes is a project that honors returning disabled U. S. Armed Forces veterans from Aransas and San Patricio counties with the presentation of a patriotic quilt. Many of the returning veterans from the Iraq war have emotional and/or physical disabilities. This project provides our local quiltmakers an opportunity to show our appreciation to the returning disabled veterans.
The quilt is a small token to honor their heroic service for our country.
The quilt consists of 6 rows by 8 rows of alternating 8" (finished) squares which makes up to 48" by 64". The squares are made from 2 1/2" by 8 1/2" strips of a variety of red, white or beige, blue, and a 4th 'small pattern'.
Some quilters use the rail fence idea and lay the dark strips so that a fence motif is seen.
Many others just randomly put the strips together and alternate as seen in this example and this one.
Donations of fabric, batting, thread and backing fabrics are appreciated.
If you choose to pre-cut the strips, please cut the stripes 2 1/2" by 9" to be squared up to 8 1/2" after the squares are completed.
